The podcast is off this week as our hosts continue to recover from all the holiday madness. For now, we reach back into the vault to our VERY first episode all the back from November 2006. Geez, how time flies.
Ever wondered what sparked the action career of one Arnold “Ah-nuld” Schwarznegger? Well… in a nutshell, it was the 1985 movie Commando. Arnold plays a retired colonel who goes back into duty to take down an evil gay villain and rescue his daughter. That is, not before some cheesy scenes and dialogue take place.
Brian and Zach recap the movie, it’s inaccuracies, Bill Paxton’s acting debut, and their favorite moments.
Due to vacations and general Holiday craziness we weren’t able to get any bonus videos up for our Kick Ass Awards last week. Well, the wait is over because those videos are listed below. Let’s give a hearty round of applause to all the winners.
Best Steven Seagal Direct to DVD Movie: The Onion Movie
Welcome to the first New Release Round Up of 2009. Unfortunately it’s a little lackluster but things should start picking up again pretty soon. Let’s see what’s out.
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again — 2008 was indeed, a great year for movies. If you’re looking for evidence, check out the movies we mentioned in our podcast. Or if you’re looking for more visual evidence, check out the video below. Some movielover with time on their hands put together a nice video tribute to 2008: The Year in Movies. So watch and if you look closely, you’ll see some Kick Ass Award winners as well. Let’s hope the great movie trend continues well into 2009.
Hey folks, as you listen to our yearly awards podcast and shake off the New Year’s hangover, I thought I’d give an article to read to ring 2009. It’s Latino Review’s Top Ten Kick Ass Movies of 2008. I can agree with some of the choices (”Dark Knight”, “The Wrestler”, “Tropic Thunder”) while some I was a bit confused on (”Vicky Cristina Barcelona”… really?) But you be the judge. As always you can discuss this in our awesome forums.
It’s the time of year again! Time to dish out yearly awards. 2008 was arguably the best summer movie year ever, bolstered by superhero sensations “Iron Man” and “The Dark Knight”. Who could forget it was the Summer of Downey Jr. too? We know what ruled our movie world this year… and what really bit the big one. (We’re looking in your direction, “Speed Racer”.) Listen as our glorious podcast hosts give out various awards in various categories. We know, it’s never been done before.
That will do it for the KICK ASS movie podcast in the year 2008… look for a re-run SPECIAL rewind episode followed by all new podcasts. February is also 80′S MONTH STRIKES BACK! All leading up to the amazingly awesome series finale in April. Happy New Year!
Ho ho ho! Happy holidays from the KICK ASS movie podcast. This year, we’ve decided to cover a holiday classic. Sure, there are plenty of classics to choose from like “Rudolph” or the “Grinch”… but we decided to go with something more recent. The 2004 Will Ferrell comedy “Elf”. Ferrell stars as Buddy the Elf, an orphaned human who sneaks into Santa’s sack and ends up growing up as an elf at the North Pole. It’s clear that Buddy can’t fit in (literally) with the elves, so one day he is told about his real father who lives in New York. So beings Buddy’s journey, as he tries to reconnect with his father, falls in love and ultimately helps save Christmas. Now doesn’t that sound like a true holiday classic?
Brian and Zach recap the film, get in the spirit with the old-school soundtrack, laugh at Will Ferrell’s manchild antics, and give props yet again to director Jon Favreau.
Way back in season one, we covered “RoboCop” on the podcast. While I’d like to think we did a good job, leave it to a random YouTube video to do a better recap. Or should I say re-RAP? Yep, it’s a rap about the movie spliced perfectly with actual dialogue from the film. It’s another great random viral video in the same vein as the Die Hard song. Enjoy:
Happy Will Smithmas everyone! Yes, it seems like in addition to the summer’s Big Willy Day over the last couple years we’ve also had Will Smithmas where the Fresh Prince shows us his acting chops in some more dramatic movies. There’s been “The Pursuit of Happyness” “I Am Legend” and this year we have the mysterious “Seven Pounds”. Let’s see what the critics have to say about it and the other releases this week.
Seven Pounds
Starring: Will Smith, Rosario Dawson, Woody Harrelson
Directed by: Gabriele Muccino
Plot: Ben Thomas is an IRS agent who gets involved in the lives of seven strangers for a mysterious purpose.
Rotten Tomatoes Freshness: 27%
Critic Consensus: “Grim and morose, Seven Pounds is also undone by an illogical plot.”
Sometimes the police, or even the FBI or CIA, are not enough to handle things, like for instance if aliens invade. For times like that you need to call in one of these agencies to come kick ass and take names.
5. CONTROL (Get Smart)
CONTROL is an agency in Washington DC who work to protect us from the evil terrorist group KAOS. Led by The Chief and Agents 86 and 99, CONTROL has been thwarting KAOS since 60’s. CONTROL is a closely guarded secret with entrances all over Washington and to get in you need to get through at least 6 doors. Agents of CONTROL are given a number of gadgets to help fight evil including a shoe phoe and the cone of silence. CONTROL’s most recent mission has them stopping KAOS leader Siegfried from assassinating the President in Los Angeles and stopping a mole in their organization. Sounds similar to another organization on the list.
